| Recap
of 2008 Season
We have had a very
busy spring and summer and already it is fall and
the clients first to arrive have been very successful.
Spring in Alaska came late this year, and made it
hard to find Grizzly bears out of their dens early.
Richard Attenberger, of Colorado Springs, CO. and
Chip Carlson of Sioux Falls, SD were both fortunate
to take nice grizzly bear after many days of hard
hunting conditions. Many of our camps were out in
0’ to -10’s, weather and this does create
lots of hard hunting and is a factor we have no
control over.
With the beginning of fishing season, in late June,
we were fortunate to have many groups out on the
waters around Stoney River Lodge. Client’s
coming from California to Florida, enjoyed catching
many species of Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Northern
Pike, Arctic Char, Arctic Grayling and the uncommon
Sheefish (Tarpon of the North). Lots of wild life
were seen while fishing and from the planes while
being transported to and from the fishing sites
and, including moose and caribou with newly born
calves, grizzly bears and black bears with first
and second year cubs, land otter with pups as well
as lots of birds of prey, eagles and shore birds.
Pictures and stories can be found on the www.fishingstoneyriverlodge.com
web site.
Many projects were accomplished over the summer
months, including a face lift to all the permanent
buildings on the premises. While the Anchorage area
had a cool wet summer, here at Stoney River Lodge,
after break-up in early June, we enjoyed many days
with temperatures in the high 70’s and low
80’s and only a very few wet days.
Starting the 10th of August we put hunters in the
mountains after Dall sheep.
Mitchel Zimmerman took the his full curl ram on
the fourth day of his seven day hunt, after putting
in many climbs up into the mountains to find his
trophy. The fifth day was spent with guide going
back into the hills after the balance of the meat
and horns. This left a day at the lodge for some
Silver Salmon fishing.

Albert & Marilyn Sparkes of Alberta, Canada
had a day fishing and catching Silver Salmon before
they headed for the mountains. They enjoyed their
wedding anniversary in the mountains where Dall
sheep were seen and did lots of traveling up and
down the hills while in pursuit for their trophy
ram.

ten days, he and his guide watched Bull moose, grizzly
bears and Ned even had a visit from a black bear while
relaxing at the spike camp.
Ned and Curly took a day to explore some of the great
fishing for Coho Salmon and Arctic Char.

Jerry Kandzer from Marianna, Florida arrived at Stoney
River Lodge, very excited to hunt for his trophy Moose.
This was his first time ever with us and He was excited
to hear that he would be taken to spike camp that
evening. After days of glassing, the opportunity for
Jerry to stalk a trophy presented itself. After his
hunt he spent some days back at the lodge explaining
in detail the events of the hunt. He had a great day
of fishing for Arctic Grayling and Coho Salmon with
Curly and did a little grouse hunting around the lodge.
What a wonderful man to have with us here at Stoney
River Lodge, hopefully he’ll plan a return trip
soon!
